چکیده

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a query translation and disambiguation as well as expansion techniques on CLEF Collections, using SMART Information Retrieval System. We focus on the query translation, disambiguation and methods to improve the effectiveness of an information retrieval. Dictionary-based method with a combination to statistics-based method is used, to avoid the problem of translation ambiguity. In addition, two expansion strategies are tested on their ability to improve the effectiveness of an information retrieval, an expansion via a relevance feedback before and after translation as well as an expansion via a domain feedback after translation. This method achieved 85.30% of the monolingual counterpart, in terms of average precision.

UNED at ImageCLEF 2004: Detecting Named Entities and Noun Phrases for Automatic Query Expansion and Structuring

This paper describes UNED experiments at the Image CLEF bilingual ad hoc task. Two different strategies are attempted: i) automatic expansion and translation using noun phrases; ii) automatic detection of named entities in the query for structured search on image caption fields. All our experiments obtain results above the average MAP for the bilingual task. Structured searches using named enti...

The Domain -Specific Track at CLEF 2007

The domain-specific track uses test collections from the social science domain to test monolingual and cross-language retrieval in structured bibliographic databases. Special attention is given to the existence of controlled vocabularies for content description and their potential usefulness in retrieval. Test collections and topics are provided in German, English and Russian. This year, a new ...

The Domain-Specific Track at CLEF 2008

The domain-specific track evaluates retrieval models for structured scientific bibliographic collections in English, German and Russian. Documents contain textual elements (title, abstracts) as well as subject keywords from controlled vocabularies, which can be used in query expansion and bilingual translation. Mappings between the different controlled vocabularies are provided. This year, new ...

Cross-Language Retrieval Using HAIRCUT for CLEF 2004

JHU/APL continued to explore the use of knowledge-light methods for scalable multilingual retrieval during the CLEF 2004 evaluation. We relied on the language-neutral techniques of character n-gram tokenization, pre-translation query expansion, statistical translation using aligned parallel corpora, fusion from disparate retrievals, and reliance on language similarity when resources are scarce....

XRCE's Participation to CLEF 2007 Domain-Specific Track

Our participation to CLEF07 (Domain-specific Track) was motivated this year by assessing several query translation and expansion strategies that we recently designed and developed. One line of research and development was to use our own Statistical Machine Translation system (called Matrax) and its intermediate outputs to perform query translation and disambiguation. Our idea was to benefit fro...
